Ned Ray McWherter was born October 15, 1930. Began career in government in 1968 when he was elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives. Elected Speaker of the House in 1972 and served in that position until 1986. That same year he was elected the 46th governor of Tennessee, serving two terms from 1987 to 1995.
